OAKVILLE'S BEST REAL ESTATE SECTION INSIDE! Beaver THE OAKVILLE A member of Metroland Media Group Ltd. Vol. 47 No. 70 Power out around town Mother Nature's fury robbed sections of Oakville of power Tuesday as severe winds, falling branches and lightning brought down hydro lines. A morning lightning strike on the Bronte Transformer Station resulted in power outages throughout Bronte starting shortly after 8 a.m., as well as Speers Road where many employees sat in dark offices with blank computer screens and dead phones. Oakville Hydro said the blackout impacted 3,895 customers with power to the area restored by noon. Not all blackouts were unintentional however as Oakville Hydro shut off power along portions of Trafalgar Road for several hours for an emergency tree removal. "There was a tree about to come down on our lines so we had to block it off and work with the Town to get a crane to lift the tree," said Alex Bystrin, Oakville Hydro president and CEO. "That necessitated cutting some customers off for a while," he said. Below, left, cancer survivor Debbie Kenwood lights one of the hundreds of luminaries that lined the relay track, in memory of her mother. At right, Emma Thompson, 3, whose cancer is in remission, was a team captain. For more photos, see page 16. They walked the first lap of Relay for Life at Appleby College Friday, with their heads held high. Some had tears in their eyes, others bore a smile -- full of hope, strength and courage. They were infants, adults, children, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, grandparents and friends. They all wore yellow. They all battled cancer -- and all 183 of them are survivors. Each stride they took at this year's Victory Lap -- the lap that marks the opening of the annual fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit -- brought an overwhelming sense of hope to those who were watching. It is hoped the disease, which takes the lives of 1,419 Canadians a week, will be defeated. Last year, the event raised more than $533,000. Today, the number stands at $454,000, but pledges will continue to come in well into July. "Relay brings everyone together. Everyone is here for the same goal, to try to fight cancer," said Rosalia Caramonete from Canadian Dream Walkers, a team that had raised $8,000 for the relay Friday.
