www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 11, 2008 - 3 Young survivors led the Victory Lap Continued from page 1 Chillin' with the Wave 94.7 to recognize the significant sum of money they raised. The top three dream teams were Team Alex, TD Canada Trust Oakville Main and the Shaynanigans. But it's not the dream team standing that the Dream Walkers care about. "It's about the care that you see in people today. We do it because you don't know what tomorrow brings. You can never go through something like cancer alone. We're here to show that we care," said Caramonete, who is a cancer survivor, herself. Dream team, Shaynanigans, showed its care in a unique way this year. The team, which is named in honour of 12 year-old Shayna McDonald, a two-time leukemia survivor, assembled a Fishing For a Cure tent site, that saw a boy holding a fishing rod; its hook placed on a treasure box that represents a cure for cancer, surrounded by colourful fish and a mermaid. The team earned the Best Tent Site award. Ian McDonald, Shayna's father, had worked with his daughter on the display "every weekend for the last month." "It's joyful," he said. The event and the final display put a smile on Shayna's face. "I'm happy, really happy, I love being at the relay," laughed Shayna. Aside from building the display with her father, Shayna had another role at this year's Relay for Life. At 7 p.m. she cut the ribbon to mark the official start of the 2008 Relay for Life, and the Survivors' Victory Lap -- led by There was also a Caregivers' Garden, which hung on the wall of Appleby's arena, to show that the support of caregivers is far from forgotten. Filled with cut-out yel- low flowers, the wall displayed the names of those who've helped a friend, a family member, even a stranger, battle cancer. Fourteen-year cancer survivor Donna Kennedy and her daughter, Ally Kennedy, were in charge of the garden. Donna was diagnosed with See They page 19 CHRIS KORNACKI / OAKVILLE BEAVER MEMORIES: Carolyn Martindale lights a luminary at Friday's Relay for Life event. youths like Shayna. The Victory Lap saw 183 survivors walk the Appleby College track, between approximately 2,000 luminaries that sat in small white bags lining the track and, later in the night, lighting the track and surrounding field. To show their appreciation, the survivors linked arms with those who took care of them during their battle with the insidious disease. On Your Way to the Cottage?
