www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 13, 2008 - 11 Bronte blackout No. 2 Two in two days for Oakville Hydro Residents in the Bronte area were plunged into darkness for the second time this week as a malfunction at the Bronte Transformer Station resulted in a Wednesday afternoon power outage for thousands of residents. Oakville Hydro officials said that at around 2:20 p.m. one of the station's lightening arresters failed, blacking out homes from Third Line and Speers Road to as far south as Lake Ontario and as far west as Mississaga Street. The malfunction caused a loud bang, which some described as sounding like a gunshot. The lightening arrester, a protective device that keeps the station equipment from being severely damaged by lightening strikes, was probably weakened by a strike earlier in the week, said officials. Other issues, including the power supply the station receives from other power stations, are also being looked into. "It (the lightening arrester) shorted," said Bruce Evans, director of operations, Oakville Hydro. "It was such a sizable amount of fault current that we decided not to pick up the feeder immediately until we had checked some of our underground express cables to make sure they had not been damaged. If we didn't do that we could have done further damage and have even longer interruptions." Evans said power was restored about 50 minutes after the incident began. The malfunction affected between 2,500-3,000 people. "All this lightening has caused us so much havoc in the last few days," said Evans. "Every utility has been experiencing these problems."
