30 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 13, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Paramedics say Cassie is brave little girl Continued from page 22 for markers," smiled Stacey. But Cassie would soon get another seizure that day. "She just said, `Daddy I'm tired,' and she got a second seizure," said the mother-oftwo. Later that night, while doing the dishes at home, Nykamp heard a radio ad for Relay for Life. "I thought it would be great to put a team in Cassie's honour, but I didn't want to do anything until I asked Stacey," explained Nykamp, while holding one of Cassie's Disney princesses colouring books. A few days after hearing the ad, Nykamp went to visit Stacey at her Oakville home. "When I first saw him I got scared. I thought `Oh no, what's wrong now?'" said Stacey. "And he told me that he wanted to put a team of paramedics in the Relay for Life for Cassie." At that moment both Nykamp and Stacey burst into tears. "That was the most memorable moment for me," said Nykamp. "My eyes are watering just to see Cassie running "When I first saw him, I got scared. I thought `Oh no, what's wrong now?' And he told me that he wanted to put a team of paramedics in the Relay for Life for Cassie." Stacey Lyons, Cassie's mom around," he said, putting his hands over his eyes. "I just felt incredibly overwhelmed. Tim and Tim (Tim Nykamp and Tim Mullen, both members of the Relay team) look after so many people and they chose Cassie," said Stacey. After Stacey's approval, Nykamp sent out a mass email to Halton paramedics, and soon a team of 10 was formed. They call themselves Cassie's Paramedics. Cassie's Paramedics are participating in the Hamilton Relay for Life, because their schedule did not allow for all 10 paramedics to be off work, during the Oakville Relay, which was held June 6. "We sold `Livestrong' Lance Armstrong bracelets, raffle tickets, and T-shirts. We also spend a day in front of Wal-Mart with Cassie to raise money," explained Nykamp. To date, the team has raised $3 500. "She's just a brave little girl," said Nykamp, looking at Cassie. Cassie is brave. And she's got the necklaces to prove it. When Stacey asked Cassie to show her Bravery Beads, Cassie brought her necklaces with her head held high. "They have a Bravery Beads program at McMaster," explained Stacey. "For each injection, chemo session, hospital visit, picture, and blood work they give her a bead. Each bead basically signifies a part of her treatment." Cassie's got five long necklaces filled with beads. She will finish her treatment after four weeks. "When Cassie was first diagnosed, the doctors described the treatment in terms of an iceberg. The first month is the tip of the iceberg. She was on steroids for 32 days. The doctors said the steroids destroy the tip of the iceberg. Treatments for the next two years destroy everything underneath the tip," explained Stacey. While Stacey is happy to have her daughter off treatment, she admits that she's feeling a little nervous. "While in treatment you know the disease is controlled, and you feel calm knowing that. But when she's off it, you don't know what's going on." Cassie turned four on June 6. The Children's Wish Foundation granted her, her wish this year--she will be travelling to Disneyland this October. "Ever since this began, (Cassie's diagnosis) we've tried to make everything normal. And we try to compensate because we just don't know..." said Stacey, with one arm wrapped around her four-year-old daughter, and the other holding her baby son.
