On June 4, Clarisse Schneider and Mackenzie Quartermaine, two senior students from St. Bernadette School, were recognized by the local humane society for the effort. The two students launched a Candy Gram Campaign in February 2007 to raise money for their favourite charity, the Oakville and District Humane Society. St. Bernadette's school spirit made it easy and fun and students helped raise funds to assist the more than 1,000 animals that go through the humane society annually. Schneider and Quartermaine eventually presented a $325 cheque along with generous contributions from Sobeys Upper Middle and Dominion Hopedale, to Bronwyn Darnley, a community outreach and education officer with the humane society. St. Bernadette School then announced its participation in the Adoption Sponsorship Program for the Oakville and District Humane Society. The school received monthly information and pictures about the adoption program. The two students received a community service award from the Humane Society and their sponsor at the Town of Oakville's June 4 Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting. Oakville residents take part in Fringe Festival Between Commutes, a new sketch comedy show by David Raitt, an Oakville writer and performer, is debuting at the Toronto Fringe Festival from July 2 to 13. Raitt is an alumnus of The Second City National Touring Company with several shows under his belt. Raitt says the title "Between Commutes" comes from a conversation he once overheard between a TTC subway worker and a passenger, and credits the ongoing debates over Toronto's transit problems with the inspiration for much of the show. Hockey 4 Africa events Almost two-and-a-half years ago eightyear-old Ryan Nirula saw a World Vision Program on a Saturday morning about HIV/AIDS, and was moved to do something to help the kids in Africa. One stat was striking to Ryan -- there are more than 15 million kids who have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS. His parents imagined the impact that this stat would have if every kid in Canada lost one or both their parents, and that pushed the entire family's desire to help, rather than just talk about the problem. That is when Ryan drafted a letter and asked for money. He promised to shave his head if he raised $100. He shaved his head, and raised more than $1,400 just from family and friends. Last year, Ryan's six-year-old sister Alison joined in, and the family hosted a hockey tournament and a benefit concert, which raised more than $8,000 for World Vision Canada. Ryan was invited to speak at the World Vision Annual General meeting. Today, Friday, June 13, the Nirulas will, once again, host a benefit concert, with jazz, blues and some gospel music.
