62 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 13, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Cricket club set for first pitch on new pitch Buzz offense By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF If you understood it, you would be hooked. That's the way Zain Khot feels, at least. Khot is convinced that a little knowledge of his favourite sport would go a long way in converting Canadians into cricket enthusiasts. "For someone who plays the game, it's very easy," said Khot, the president of the Oakville Cricket Club. "It's not a difficult sport to understand. It's like baseball, you hit and try to get someone out but there are so many ways to get someone out. Once you get it, it's really fun." Khot can certainly relate to the difficulty of learning a new sport, though. "My sons play American football," he said. "They've tried explaining it to me many times but I still don't know what it is." Khot and his fellow club members will be doing their part to pass on their knowledge of cricket this Saturday when Oakville plays its first game at its new pitch at Glenashton Park, beside the Iroquois Ridge Community Centre. They will be demonstrating the finer points of hitting and pitching, explaining the rules and giving spectators the chance to try the game. Meanwhile, the club's match will be going on so participants can see what they are learning in action. Though the field itself is smaller than at the club's previous location, Khot believes it will help the club grow because the conditions are much improved on the artificial turf field it shares with local field hockey teams. "Visiting teams, many times they refused to play," Khot said of the previous field in the Morden and Speers area. "You need a particular bounce CARRIERS WANTED The Oakville Beaver The Oakville Beaver is looking for newspaper carriers in your neighbour hood! Support your local carrier when you pitch. Without that consistent bounce, it's hard to play so the field will make a tremendous difference." The previous location also posed a problem because of the proximity of neighbouring houses. Even though the new field is smaller, the houses are not as close to the field. Khot said the sport's popularity has continued to grow since the focus has been put on a shorter version of the game that lasts about three and a half hours, instead of matches that used to last as long as five days. He said a premier league in India playing the shorter version plays to crowds of 50,000 to 60,000. Khot would one day like to see cricket taught in local high schools, which is where students get their first exposure to many sports. "If we could teach it at the grassroots level, that would be the first major step," he said. That would require resources, volunteers and time, all of which are in short supply at the moment. Khot said cricket is steadily growing in the Greater Toronto Area. Eventually, the club hopes to build a cricketonly pitch in the Nayagawa/Dundas area. For now, it hopes its new field will help numbers swell in the local club. "People used to go to Mississauga to play. Now they're coming here," he said. "We're already seeing interest in people coming back to Oakville." Saturday's game begins at noon and Oakville Mayor Rob Burton will be there at 11 a.m. to officially open the field and the club's season. untracked The Oakville Buzz is the second-lowest scoring team in its division, but you wouldn't know it from its past three games. After doubling the Mimico Mountaineers 14-7 and pounding the Huntsville Hawks 20-3 last weekend, the Buzz (11-3) has struck for 48 goals over its last three contests. Overall, Oakville is averaging 10.1 goals per game on the Ontario junior B lacrosse season, ranking it behind the Halton Hills Bulldogs (11.6) and Mimico (10.8) in the South East Division. Dylan Gilbert had seven goals in the two games for the Buzz, with Joel Zalasky notching six. Josh Ruys and Brad Gillies added five markers apiece. Also notching at least one goal were Braden Gallant, Spencer Taugher, Connor Gamble, Alex Kruse, Harry Hristopoulos, Nic Soubry and Robert Bentivegna. Cam Watts and Ryan Garbutt each recorded a victory in net. The Buzz visited Halton Hills last night and will host Clarington tonight (8 p.m.) at Glen Abbey.
