14 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 14, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Students acing The Patch Challenge T he Oakville and District Humane Society is pleased to announce the winners of The Patch Challenge, recognizing the acts of kindness demonstrated by two St. Bernadette School students with a lot of heart -- Mackenzie Quartermaine and Clarisse Schneider. Approximately 5,000 school children a year participate in classroom humane education programs. The Patch Challenge was launched during the 2002-2003 school year, to encourage children to complete age-appropriate kindness tasks provided by the Challenge curriculum. The program began and has continued as a result of donations made to the Oakville & District Humane Society (ODHS) by local Oakville Toyota and Lexus President Frank Apa. The Patch Challenge education program pays tribute to the dog it honours. Patch, a well-known Shih Tzu owned by Apa, was a company pet, mascot and corporate spokes-dog that had an integral role at his owner's dealerships. Patch typified how people and animals can interact in a positive way. In the spirit of PATCH -- People and Animals - Together Create Harmony -- each year acts of kindness are submitted to the Oakville & District Humane Society, culminating in the selection of one `act' that supports the spirit of the challenge. The 2007-2008 school year winners are Grade 7 students Mackenzie Quartermaine and Clarisse Schneider. The students demonstrated their love of animals, by turning Valentine's Day into an opportunity to support animals in need. Schneider and Quartermaine obtained approval from the school administration to sell Valentine Candy Grams to Grades 4-8 students. The students raised $380 selling lollipops with personalized messages. The students used this money to make a donation to the Oakville and District Humane Society. "We were delighted with the girl's act of kindness," noted Johanne Golder, Executive Director at the Oakville & District Humane Society. "Every donation really makes a difference to the shelter and to animals in need. The girls chose a special day and way to share their love for animals, while helping other students learn more about the shelter." Golder further explained that in addition to the Valentine Candy Grams the students also invited the shelter staff into the school to make presentations. "They wanted all of the students to know about the Oakville & District Humane Society and to feel part of helping the animals. Education is such an important part of our work," added Golder, "they chose a great way to help deliver our message." The next Patch Challenge begins in September.
