www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 14, 2008 - 17 Friends treated royally Friends are tops at ClearView Christian Reformed Church's Friendship Club and they were treated to the best recently -- just so they'd know it. Marlene Nirula is one of the co-ordinators for the Friendship Club at the church in Oakville. The club began more than 20 years ago at what was then Clarkson Christian Reformed Church and is now ClearView Church. It began with four friends and now boasts 30 members -- with an equal number of volunteer mentors who work oneon-one with the friends. The group was started by Nirula's mom, Alice VanSloten, to fill the gap in the ministries of the church to provide a place where people with cognitive disabilities could meet, study and socialize. The friends currently range in age from teenagers to those in their fifties. The Friendship Club meets weekly, on Monday evenings, from September until the end of April. "We love to begin our evening singing songs, (action songs are great fun), followed by a Bible study and related crafts; with game nights on a regular basis, and an annual Christmas banquet. This January, we had a great time with our first annual Friendship Talent Show," said Nirula. Nirula has been involved in the program for most of its two decades, but has been co-ordinator for only two years. To end the season this year, Nirula said she wanted to do something very special for the friends who were excited about a "party.". With less than a week to make it happen, she organized a surprise Red Carpet Event. Gary Risidore and Doug Hickson, owner of Foxrun Limousines, helped out with their stretch limousines. As the friends arrived, they were assisted into a waiting limousine and taken for a ride around the neighbourhood. Upon their return to the church, the friends exited the limo onto the red carpet, where they were introduced by name and greeted by `paparazzi' and fans -- who were all members of the church. The friends were then welcomed into the church by a hostess and enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while waiting for everybody to arrive, and then finished the evening enjoying other favourite activities. Nirula said her goal for the event was to make each of the friends feel like a superstar. "Every one of us, regardless of personal circumstances, has talents and gifts that we can share with those around us, and the Red Carpet Event was just a way to celebrate that everyone is unique and deserves to be celebrated. It was an absolutely wonderful experience for our friends and they were thrilled with such special treatment planned just for them. It was truly an evening to remember," said Nirula.
