King's surprised the entire field at this week's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) single-A championships in Chatham-Kent, including itself, by winning all six of its games to capture gold. The Cavaliers, seeded 13th in the 16-team tournament, were one of four local teams to win OFSAA soccer medals this week as the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders won girls' AA silver, the T.A. Blakelock Tigers earned boys' AAA bronze and the Loyola Hawks claimed girls' AAA antique. "Even throughout the tournament, as we were winning games, we were talking about how it would be a Cinderella story but weren't really thinking it would actually happen," admitted King's captain Matt Nellich. "As we made it to the quarter-finals and semifinals, we realized we could easily take this tournament." The Cavaliers capped off their undefeated OFSAA showing with a 3-1 win over Guido De Bres, the fifth game in the tournament that they won by two goals or more. The other contest was a thrilling 3-2 triumph over Pain Court in the semifinals. King's trailed 2-0 with seven minutes to go, but Cameron Eisses scored twice in the dying minutes of regulation to force overtime and then netted the winner. "Our coach (Mike Zietsma) told us (we had to) play our game and show we wanted it more," Grade 12 student Kevin Kim said. "We kept our heads up and stayed calm throughout the game, and didn't fall into their traps." Eisses finished the tournament with a team-high nine goals. Brandon Regeling -- a Grade 9 player -- added four, while Marco Ilao and Devon Kauffeldt each scored three. Jason Cornelius (two) and Josh Markle had the other Cavaliers markers at the tournament. The gold is the first OFSAA medal in any sport for King's, a 360-student school in the northeast end of town. "It's a huge step forward for us. We've been trying to put more of an emphasis on athletics this year... and this really helps that," Zietsma said. King's, which outscored its opponents 22-5 at the tournament, finished the season on a 10-game winning streak and 14game unbeaten run. Silver for Aquinas girls Aquinas' gold-medal game Wednesday against Peterborough's Holy Cross was decided in a shootout, but that might not even be what the Raiders will remember most about the 2008 tournament, held in Collingwood. Aquinas staged a remarkable comeback of its own in the semifinal earlier in the day, striking for three goals in the final 13 minutes of regulation time to shock Bishop MacDonell 3-2 and advance to the title match. SILVER AND GOLD: The King's Christian Collegiate Cavaliers (pictured above) and St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders (below) were two of the four local schools to win Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) soccer medals this week. King's won all six of its games at the single-A boys' tournament in Chatham-Kent to earn gold, while the Raiders' only loss at the AA girls' championships in Collingwood came in the gold-medal game. The T.A. Blakelock Tigers captured bronze in the AAA boys' tournament in Thunder Bay, while the Loyola Hawks took antique (fourth) at the girls' AAA championships in Hamilton.
