Fire on Friday the 13th By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Friday the 13th brought a combination good and back luck to the residence of one Shaw Street couple with a fire severely damaging their garage, but sparing the rest of the house. At around 4 p.m. Onil Marenger had finished cleaning his pool and was returning his tools to the garage when he noticed a fire ragging in the garage's attic. "I just saw the fire was running over our stuff," he said. "We had all sorts of plastic and stuff up there so it was moving quickly." Grabbing a garden hose Onil began to spray the fire, but the smoke was so thick that he had to continuously retreat outside for a gulp of fresh air before returning into the garage to fight the fire. Onil was aided in his efforts by a pair of Nipissing University students (Brayden Middleton and Tanner Wills) who had just returned home for a weekend in Oakville when they spotted the fire. "We were driving down the street and I was like, `Dude, that looks like a fire,'" said Middleton. After calling the fire department Middleton and Willis informed Onil's wife Annette Marenger that her garage was on fire and then joined Onil in the backyard where they took turns hosing the flame. With the arrival of the Oakville Fire Department the fire was quickly brought under control with firefighters climbing onto the garage's roof to see if the fire had spread into the walls of the home. Damage to the garage is estimated at between $15,000 and $20,000. The fire department is looking into faulty electrical wiring as the possible cause of the blaze. "We were lucky," said Annette. "The fire got the garage, but didn't get the house."
