www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 20, 2008 - 23 Family endured what no family should have to Continued from page 22 Aug. 29, 2006, involved making an incision in Max's abdomen for the G-tube. "It went really well," said Cheryl. "We thought we'd be able to take Max home within just a few weeks." But when Cheryl and the rest of the family arrived at the hospital the next day they learned that Max was not doing well. His right lung had collapsed. "I wasn't allowed to nurse him," she said. "He would look at me and cry because he was hungry and he knew I was there." "He definitely knew us. He would recognize us when we would come into his room." The family decided it was best to let him rest alone for a while. They returned to the hospital later that evening, but Max's condition hadn't changed. "Everyone stayed with us that night. Colin, and Max's grandparents, we stayed 'til late in the night." The next morning did not prove to be any better for Max. The doctors told the family they needed to decide what Max's next step would be. "That day we had to make decisions that I hope no family has to make for a child," said Cheryl. "We didn't want Max to suffer, we decided to turn off the machines." Max died on Aug. 31, 2006. Max's nurses still keep in touch with them and his doctor calls them twice a year touch base. "Through Max, we had the opportunity to meet so many people and they've all supported us," she said. Max's struggle for life, and his death, drove his family's desire to start a charity for SMA. In the process, however, they learned about an existing charity, called the Rebecca Run, which aims to raise money for research towards a cure for SMA. In just five years, the run has generated more than $550,000 for treatment and cure research. Every year, Louis Smith, the race director, selects a race honoree -- this year, Max. Cheryl took part in the run for the first time last year. Through a garage sale and pledges from family and friends her team of 30 was able to raise $20,000. The team is called Miles for Max. Cheryl will be in the run this year July 5 in Newmarket. This time, Cheryl will be doing a 3 km walk because she is 16 weeks pregnant and expecting a healthy baby girl who doesn't have SMA. She is also holding a garage sale tomorrow, June 21, from 8 a.m. to noon at 1519 Pinecliff Rd. to raise money and awareness about the disorder.
