For the past four years Kamla Bingham-Smith and Patricia Paterson have been busy making beautiful window coverings in the GTA. "We've been told we're the best kept secret around," said Kamla. But not any more. Kamla's, Glen Abbey-based business, KBS Soft Furnishings and Patricia's, which is called Patricia's Custom Drapes located in Joshua Creek, has thrived on word of mouth recommendation. The women have a passion for what they do and that comes across in the caliber of their work. Kamla is a certified interior decorator who specializes in window and fabric coverings. Patricia has loved sewing all her life and constantly keeps herself updated with styles and techniques by doing courses at Sheridan College. Patricia does residential and retail sales house calls and the bulk of Kamla's work often comes through designers. Swags and working with silks are among Kamla's favourite projects and Roman shades and plaids are among Patricia's specialties. They also tackle cushions and bedcovers and oversee the installation of window treatments to make sure they hang properly. Both admit they are particularly fussy about details. The longtime friends collaborate on their projects, sharing their expertise, shopping together for fabric and heading to trade shows together. "One day our dream is to merge our businesses," said Kamla. "There is so much work that we don't have to compete with each other." Custom drapes are not as expensive as one might think, said Patricia. The biggest variable is hardware and fabric. The labour on a $20 per metre fabric is the same as it is on a $200 per metre fabric. "Custom work is an investment that will last 10 to 20 years and longer," she added.
