www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 28, 2008 - 19 Save lives, DON'T DRINK & DRIVE! Have A Safe Canada Day Holiday! It's over. You leave the hospital... the sun is shining... people are walking and talking like nothing has changed... it's time to go home... there are things to do... people to call... a funeral to arrange... a son to bury. Life as we knew it ended for my family with a 3 am phone call. Our son, Bruce, had been in a terrible crash... The next day, our son was gone. It was impossible. At 26, Bruce was a strapping, invincible, indestructible police Constable. No one could hurt him. But someone did. He hit our son head-on. He died at the scene. Bruce had just bought his first house, life was good... he was looking forward to the future. He should have had a future. How do you begin to pick up the pieces after losing a loved one to something so senseless? I didn't know what to do. And then I remembered... A week before the crash, we had a call from MADD Canada asking for a donation. We turned them down. Now, I couldn't get MADD out of my mind. I called Victim Services and asked for help. Thankfully, they didn't turn me down. That was the start of my healing. Soon I was volunteering, and in the MADD Canada family I had somewhere to focus all my pain and frustration. I began speaking at high schools, talking about Bruce, and how he had joined his fellow officers in the battle against impaired driving, a battle that ultimately took his life. By telling his story, Bruce was still making a difference. As the new National President of MADD Canada, I'm very proud to carry on the fight against the violent crime of impaired driving. It was the fierce desire to change the face of this crime and its countless, innocent victims that brought me to the decision to take on this important position. As president, I'm asking that you consider donating to our mission. Together, we can bring about more legislative change for stronger impaired driving laws in every province. We can bring our effective multi-media assembly to more schools across Canada. And we can continue to reach out to the 20,000 Canadians who will turn to Victim Services this year We won't let them down. With your help, MADD Canada will continue to support a balanced program of public awareness, education, legislation reform and victim support. Our goal is to eliminate the killing and maiming caused by impaired driving. And it's working... In the past 20 years MADD Canada programs have helped to save over 25,000 lives in Canada. We are making a difference! In the blink of an eye, my life changed forever. My amazing son, Bruce, was gone. And I had a choice to make. I could sit home and mourn the loss of my child or I could do something about it. In the end, it was an easy choice. I can't do anything to change the past, but I can make a difference on the future. And so can you. Please send your generous donation to MADD Canada today and help us fight for a future with promise and hope a future where impaired driving is a thing of the past.
