The doors to the building were locked, with flyers posted informing staff that the plant would be shut down until further notice. The wheels are in motion to build a new St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, but the Halton District Catholic School Board is still facing several hurdles before the groundbreaking can occur. The building is slated to be built on the same site as the current school, which is located in southcentral Oakville on Dorval Drive. The main obstacle facing the board right now is funding, according to Giacomo Corbacio, superintendent of facility management services. The projected cost of the new school is $32 million. The provincial ministry of education announced in September 2007 it would provide $14.3 million for the project. The board is waiting for approval of further funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education. "We've gotten some funding approved from the ministry, but the big thing we are waiting for right now is one more piece of funding from them," Corbacio said. "We are also waiting for the ministry's approval of the project so we can move forward." Another major step that needs to be taken before construction can commence is obtaining permission from the Town.
