The first-year political science student was chosen to participate in the International Students Volunteer program. The program aims to provide students who wish to volunteer in communities abroad with an adventure travel agenda that encourages conservation, community development, education and recreation. Syme said that while she had organized several volunteer initiatives as the president of one of the university's residences, she had never pictured herself doing volunteer work at this scale. During her trip, Syme will work at an elephant "The politics courses at school put a strong emphasis on the environment." She will also work on habitat restoration. Syme could have gone to Australia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, or Dominican Republic but instead she decided to go to Thailand so she can work with endangered animals. "The politics courses at school put strong emphasis on the environment," she added, saying that her schoolwork really opened up her eyes to the world and sparked her interested in helping others. Syme will spend the first two weeks of the program volunteering in a project that's yet to be outlined. The second two weeks will be devoted to exploring the country, scuba diving and various other activities. Syme was accepted to the program in late December. Since then, she has been busy trying to raise money for her trip. "With the flight it's going to cost $5,000 all together," she explained. Syme wrote a letter outlining how important the trip is to her and to her education and sent it to local businesses and organizations to help her with some of the costs. She held a silent auction June 1, from which she was able to raise approximately $2,000, and Service Plus Aquatics, an Oakville based company, offered to provide her with the balance outstanding her fees. While Syme knows that she will be working with endangered animals during her stay, she is not given a specific agenda until 60 days before her scheduled visit.
