www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 4, 2008 - 33 Event goes to dogs in Paws for Hope This August the Canadian Cancer Society is going to the dogs. The Oakville Unit will celebrate another first in the community, its first Paws for Hope trail walk-a-thon where dogs and their owners walk together to raise funds for people living with cancer. Scheduled for Sunday, August 24 at Pilgrim's Park (1551 Pilgrim's Way), participants will enjoy a leisurely walk through the Glen Abbey trail system. The fun will get underway at 9:30 a.m. with registration and a special family warm up. The walk will officially start at 10 a.m. "We are so excited to bring Paws for Hope to the Oakville community," says Lisa Moffatt, Fundraising Coordinator for the Oakville Unit. "Nothing beats a leisurely Sunday morning walk on the trails with yourfamily and pet." "We often hear from cancer patients and caregivers about how important their furry friends are in their cancer journey. Pets can provide companionship and comfort. We thought it was finally time to host an event that the entire family can participate in... even the dog," said Moffatt. The first Paws for Hope walk-a-thon took place in 1993 thanks to a great initiative by Nichole Laderoute from the Québec City Unit. Nichole, who had been diagnosed with cancer, wanted to create a fundraising event that would be fun for the whole family and feature her favourite animal and loyal friend: her dog. Since its inception, Paws for Hope events have continued to take place in Quebec and have recently started to branch out in communities in Ontario. 2008 marks Oakville's first event. Paws for Hope is a pledge based fundraising event. Participants that raise a minimum of $25 in pledges will receive the Paws for Hope "doggie bag" which includes treats for the trails, water and clean up bags. Participants that raise a minimum of $50 or more in pledges will receive the "doggie bag" plus an official Paws for Hope t-shirt for owners and bandanna for the dogs. Funds raised from the event will continue to help the Canadian Cancer Society: · fund research on all types of cancer, · offer information on cancer, risk reduction and treatment, · provide support for people living with cancer, family members and their friends.
