www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 4, 2008 - 3 Tour of Hope barbecue features original Terry Fox van A piece of Canadian history is coming to Oakville Wednesday, July 9 as ScotiaMcLeod -- along with Oakville residents -- welcomes the Tour of Hope. The original van used by Terry Fox in 1980 has been restored by Ford of Canada and is making a victory lap across Canada to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. A Terry Fox Tour of Hope barbecue will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Rd W., (just east of Fourth Line). A donation to cancer research in Terry's name would be greatly appreciated. In addition to a barbecue, there will be a 1km children's race following the Tour of Hope van, special guest speakers, T-shirts, photos and more. In 1980, Terry Fox began his now historic Marathon of Hope. Following him every kilometre of his inspirational journey was a 1980 Ford Econoline van. Until recently, the whereabouts of that van were unknown. However, on May 22, the newly restored van was unveiled and the keys handed over to Terry's brother, Darrel, to start a new journey on behalf of cancer research. The Terry Fox Foundation announced that the van would be going on a Canadian tour, starting in St. John's, Newfoundland, produced and organized witht he support of the employees of ScotiaMcLeod. "One thousand ScotiaMcLeod employees in 50 locations are enthusiastically waiting the arrival of the Fox family and Terry's van at locations coast to coast," said Craig Jarvis, manager and advisor at ScotiaMcLeod. "In the spirit of Terry Fox, all events will be inclusive with no admissio fees being caharged. Our goal is to collect donations for cancer research." "ScotiaMcLeod has shown a sincere commitment to furthering Terry's wish of eradicating cancer," said Darrell. "The employees have given us a chance to share Terry's Marathon of Hope with the country, allowing the public to experience first hand Terry's unselfish act to help us all."
