LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER FOREVER YOUNG: Jessie McTavish (front) releases a bowl while Cathie Stephan looks on Wednesday at the Oakville Lawn Bowling Club. The club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this weekend. Jack of all trades Continued from page 44 ing," Buddell says, despite the similarities between the sports. "One side of the green might curl a foot more than the other, the jack is always a different length (the first bowler rolls it and can send it long or short within a certain area, depending on their preference) and it gets moved around." Imagine curling when you're lying three and all of a sudden the rings are shifted backward and to the right by four feet. I keep delivering bowls with varying degrees of success. When I roll one within a couple of feet, it's time to quit. "So how did the rookie do?" I ask the 91-year-old former provincial champion Ron Robson as he walks up the green. "Not too bad," he says, giving me a brief moment of satisfaction. "But you're still bringing your hand across a little too much," he adds, pointing out the flaw in my delivery he could spot from 100 feet away. Fortunately, I've got some time to work on it.
