Street Legal No License No Insurance Great for Exercise or Leisure Ride Five community members will be competing step against step to see who lives the healthiest lifestyle. Every morning, for the next week, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton; Rod Jerred, managing editor of The Oakville Beaver; Brett Herrington, chair of the Oakville Public Library Board; Nina de Vaal, cirector of recreation and culture and Dr. Bob Nosal, medical officer of health for Halton Region, will be clipping on a pedometer loaned to them by the Oakville Public library to count every step they take during the week. The competition aims to increase public awareness about the town's new Make your Move program and the launch of the library's pedometer lending program, Count Your Steps... To Better Health, which allows residents of Oakville, who have a valid library card to borrow pedometers from Oakville libraries. It takes 10,000 steps a day to maintain a healthy weight and Burton is not sure if he'll come close to reaching that number. Yet he admits that as mayor he's constantly on the move. "Being mayor, I'm out a lot," explained Burton, adding that his daily walking exercises consist of walking LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER SYNCHRONIZE YOUR PEDOMETERS: Oakville Beaver Managing Editor Rod Jerred, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and Oakville Public Library Board Chair Brett Herrington set their pedometers at zero before taking the challenge. from the car to the locations that he needs to be at during the day. He said he doesn't get much exercise aside from the job, because as mayor he's working from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. Burton is sure that his biggest competition is Herrington, from the Oakville Public Library. That's because Herrington not only plays ultimate Frisbee, once a week, but he also plays soccer. Yet, Herrington's job as an accountant puts Burton at an advantage. "There isn't a lot of walking involved. But I'm always walking around the building," said Herrington. Jerred is also a little worried about the amount of exercise he gets at work. However, he walks his two dogs daily and works out sporadically. Nonetheless, Jerred is de Vaal's biggest competition. "He's the one who challenged us," she laughed. The director of recreation and culture, works out daily and her workout includes a one-hour walk on the treadmill. Fifty pedometers have been loaned out already, and the Town hopes that the program will encourage residents of Oakville to become, and stay, active. Similar to borrowing a book, DVD or other library resource, the pedometers will be loaned out for a three-week period and will come with a resource package containing useful information related to walking. "The goal is to encourage Oakville residents to walk 10,000 steps a day, with 2,000 to 4,000 at a brisk pace," said Yvonne Everard-Parr, health promoter for Community Health Services at the Halton Region Health Department. The Region launched a pilot program last September in Milton, making Oakville the second town in Halton participating with the program. "If you think about the fact that we're taking steps to create the most livable town in Canada, right here in Oakville, and given what our livable Oakville is already and will be in the future, it makes sense to take steps to improve our individual health too," said Burton. A pedometer is a small device that measures the number of steps a person takes. The five individuals participating in the Count Your Steps to Better Health competition will take the pedometer off before going to bed, and will put it back on the next morning. They will record the number of steps they take each day because on July 9, they will give in their pedometers and tally cards to see who has taken the most steps during the week.
