McGuiness, the director of intercultural programs and earth sciences teacher at Appleby College, is known for his leadership in establishing the international service projects as a graduation requirement for all students attending Appleby College. Through this initiative, students testify to an increased understanding of the positive effect the can have on the lives of others, as well as an increased feeling of compassion concerning the world as a whole. The award recognizes elementary and secondary school teachers for their innovative use or inspired them to realize their potential. This award honours the talented and caring teachers in this country whose contribution to the lives of individual Canadians, and to Canada as a whole, is truly priceless," says Prime Minister Stephen Harper. A total of 67 awards (16 Certificates of Excellence and 51 Certificates of Achievement) were presented to educators across Canada. McGuiness received a certificate signed by the Prime Minister, and Appleby College will receive a cash award of $1,000 to be spent under his direction. The Prime Minister announced the names of the recipients at a special ceremony in Ottawa on May 15.
