www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 5, 2008 - 5 Region urges residents to frustrate mosquitoes By Melanie Hennessey SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER OAKVILLE'S ORIGINAL BOOTCAMP 2 LOCATIONS: St Cuthberts Anglican Church 1541 Oakhill Dr. (off Maple Grove) 6:00am, 9:30am, 6:00pm River Oaks Community Church 2435 Munn's Avenue East 6:00am, 7:15am, 6:00pm, 7:15pm As Halton enters peak West Nile virus (WNv) season, Halton Region's health department is urging residents to take steps that will help reduce the number of potential mosquito breeding grounds in the area. While the virus has yet to show up this year in any local humans, birds or mosquito pools, Halton manager of enteric and vector-borne diseases Lisa Fortuna said it's still important for homeowners to remove standing water from around their property. "Standing water gives mosquitoes more and more opportunities to breed," she said. "Residents should check their eavestroughs, shrubbery, wading pools, flower pots and even depressions in their lawn, for standing water." Fortuna said there's been an increase in the mosquito population this year because of all the water Mother Nature has been providing -- substantial runoff from snow melting in the spring followed by heavy rains. The Region began its West Nile virus surveillance and control program in May. So far, residents have reported 398 dead bird sightings, which is down from 490 at the same time last year. "The bird population is so depleted from West Nile in previous seasons," explained Fortuna. Dead birds, particularly crows and blue jays, help track the presence of WNv. Six reported birds have been sent for testing, with four coming back negative and two results still outstanding. The Region has also been applying mosquito larvicide to catch basins or areas of standing water where staff has identified mosquito larvae. So far 68 larvicide applications have been made, which is down from the 80 applications made by the same time last year. Fortuna said WNv-positive birds and mosquito pools usually show up in July, while human cases are more apt to surface in August. The health department has consistently found WNv activity in Halton's bird population since 2001 and the mosquito population since 2002. There were only two probable human cases of WNv reported in Halton residents last year. Both were deemed to be travel-related. Residents can protect themselves from mosquito bites by wearing tightly-woven, light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants, avoiding the outdoors from early evening to morning and using an approved insect repellent that contains DEET.
