10 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 9, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Start times are changing for many public schools By Tim Whitnell SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Thirty schools within the Halton District School Board will have different start and end times to the instructional day this fall. The number of schools with altered bell times is almost evenly split, with 16 schools to Enjoy up to 50% * On Selected Items off* Suits and Sport Coats by Coppley, Ermenegildo Zegna, Samuelsohn, Canali and more! Pants · Dress Shirts · Ties Sportswear · Shoes · Outerwear...and more! have later start times and 13 earlier. The one unique situation is the new Gardiner elementary school in Georgetown. Until it opens, projected for this November, its students will be split between two other Georgetown schools. Students temporarily directed to Silver Creek P.S. will start their day at 9:30 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. while Gardiner pupils at Harrison P.S. will start at 9:35 a.m. and finish at 3:55 p.m. In Oakville, eight schools will have new start and end times with five starting later and three earlier. Maple Grove, Linbrook and E. J. James will begin the school day 30 minutes later with Falgarwood 20 minutes later and Lorne Skuce, five minutes. Heritage Glen P.S. and Oakville-Trafalgar High School each will start 30 minutes earlier, while Munn's P.S. starts 25 minutes earlier. Besides the temporary start and end times for the new Gardiner school students in Georgetown, north Halton has 12 other schools that will experience changes in bell times in 2008-09, eight earlier and four later. "We appreciate that this is a challenge for many parents," board business superintendent Steve Parfeniuk said at the school board meeting about the overall time changes. The board says it lets parents know about bell-time changes in June each year so families can make adjustments to their weekday schedules. Parfeniuk said letters should have been sent home with all students notifying parents of any changes for their school. For 2008-09, the Halton public board had to consider the impact of decreased walk-to distances for senior elementary students (from 3.2 to 1.6 kilometres), which made more students eligible for busing, plus the elimination of transportation exemptions approved earlier last year. Parfeniuk said that as a result of transportation changes the board will need about 30 more school buses for 2008-09, at an additional cost of about $1.2 million. The superintendent said that in almost all cases the school transportation consortia Halton Student Transportation Services, comprised of the Halton public and Catholic boards and the area two French-language boards, establishes bell times based on its school bus routes. Each year in May consortia representatives meet to review student enrolment projections, school boundary changes and new school openings in order to develop bus schedules and route information for parents and bus operators Attridge, Stock, Tyler and First Student (formerly Laidlaw).
