Instead, the Longhorns settled for an 8-8 draw with the Toronto Maddogs in Northern Football Conference action at Birchmount Stadium. Oakville led 8-0 in the fourth quarter, but the Maddogs pulled within six on a conceded safety and then tied the game with a touchdown on the final play of regulation. Toronto missed the extra point attempt, however, forcing overtime. Goalline stand in overtime After both teams turned the ball over on their first possessions of the CFL-style overtime (in which each team gets a maximum of two possessions that start at its opponent's 35yard line), the Maddogs drove down to inside Oakville's one-yard line. That's when the Longhorns' defence came up huge, stuffing Toronto on three straight running plays before Mike Borisenko forced a fumble and Jeff Hardiman recovered it in the Oakville end zone. The Longhorns fumbled on their ensuing possession, ending the game. "(A tie) is not the worst thing that could have happened to us," said Oakville head coach Barry Emo. "The point helped us in the standings." Oakville (1-2-1) now sits seventh in the NFC standings, one point ahead of the North Bay Bulldogs and Toronto Raiders (both 1-3). The top eight teams in the NFC will make the playoffs. The Longhorns continued to struggle moving the ball offensively Sunday, meaning the team's defence was out on the field for three quarters of the game. "I cannot say enough about the defence," Emo said. "It was a hot day out there, and on field turf it was even hotter. Those guys battled. That was one of the gutsiest performances I've seen by a defence in this league in a number of years." Oakville's lone touchdown was set up on a special teams trick play, as punter Mike Ray threw a pass to uncovered gunner Ryan Robertson that went for 55 yards, setting the Longhorns up inside the Toronto one-yard line. Demetrius Woodard, filling in for latearriving quarterback Josh Spanik, broke the plane on the next play to give Oakville the 8-0 lead. Outside of that play, the Longhorns were unable to muster up hardly any offence. "We're kind of like a 50-goal scorer (in hockey) who is in that scoring slump and is starting to squeeze the stick a bit," Emo said. "I believe in the systems we have. What we have to do is find a way to get the ball into our athletes' hands, be a bit more disciplined and be a bit more patient." Oakville might have an opportunity to break out offensively this weekend, when it faces the 0-4 Kingston Privateers. Kingston has been outscored 117-54 this year. The game, Oakville's last home contest of the regular season, is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field.
