www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 11, 2008 - 27 Halla urges residents to host their own fundraiser H ello from a busy Halla! A couple of weeks ago I was so enchanted with a Zimbabwe sculpture called Preening that I got it and placed it on a big rock. Then, I visited the $Million Or More Oakville ($MOMO) Waterfront Festival booth where I was inspired by people reaching into their pockets to donate. I was particularly moved by a grand lady in a long dress and beautiful straw hat who quietly arranged her twenty dollar bill in the glass jar to motivate others to give more. Of course it was great to see Canada Day festivities and fireworks. Lots of fun and people getting together. My grandmother always says that we elephants in our herd must support each other. That's how we work as our very own small society, making sure we all find grass or bushes to eat and water to drink each day, and ward off lion attacks. That got me to thinking about $MOMO and the grassroots efforts coming together to ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa by supporting the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Did you know that since 2003, the Foundation has funded more than 250 projects in 15 African countries, projects that provide care to women who are ill and struggling to survive, assist orphans and other AIDS-affected children, support grandmothers and the children in their care, and sustain networks of people living with HIV and AIDS. $MOMO efforts include many individuals and organizations working together too. I can hardly wait for the Community Artists Yard Sale on September 6th at various community churches. Gillian Zimmerman is organizing the Amazing Race Against Time on Sept. 28. Hilary Speed is leading Metres or More for Oakville where everyone will be asked to circle the Oakville Place Shopping Mall with twoonies (those Bronte Creek Park running GPS program for kids Bronte Creek Provincial Park is going high tech with GPS. A new program will teach youths and general visitors about navigating with GPS technology. School groups and visitors will have the opportunity to learn about and use handheld GPS receivers to locate a series of waypoints. The GPS program has been in the planning and development stage for over a year. The major stumbling block was due to the high price tag of a classroom set of hand-held GPS receivers. Thanks to a donation from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation via the new TD Canada Trust branch in the Burloak shopping plaza and an in-store discount from Radioworld and Garmin; the hardware problem was solved. The program will run July 10, 17, Aug. 14 and 28 from 7-8 p.m. in the Day-use area. For more information on park events and facilities, call 905-827-6911 or visit www.BronteCreek.org. coins with polar bears on them why not elephants next time?) by Oct. 25. $MOMO encourages anyone to create their very own event. A school or college might undertake a fundraiser, families might host a potluck dinner, or folks might throw a wine-and-cheese party. By donating funds raised directly to the Stephen Lewis Foundation and referencing $MOMO, you will help Oakville reach its goal. Remember any and all amounts help make a difference when currently 33 million people are living with HIV in Africa, of which 61 percent are women, including 13 million orphans. Grandmothers of Alberta for a New Generation (a different sort of GANG) held a Scrabble game tournament and raised $50,000 (the Scrabble Hasbro company was not involved). How fun is that? Well, I'm off to the river now with my baby brother, two sisters, aunt, and grandmother, and the other 10 elephants in our herd we're going to spray ourselves with our trunks to cool off, because today is very hot. My goodness, you could even have a water hose spraying party to raise money, and pretend that you're elephants.
