www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 11, 2008 - 43 Team effort lifts OAK to overall title at provincials A champion never stands on the podium alone. That sentiment, the motto of the Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK), rung true at the Ontario Provincial Swimming Championships in Thunder Bay last week. OAK won its first provincial team title in eightyears, finishing the meet with 1,126 points -- 172 more than second-place Toronto Swim Club. Brampton's Cobra Swim Club came third with 608 points. "Our win at this year's long-course provincials reflects the depth and quality of the talent in the Oakville Aquatic Club," said OAK head coach Christy Yaremczuk. "It took all 52 swimmers working together, wanting to win the championship banner, to get the outstanding results that we did." Perhaps best illustrating the OAK swimmers' teamwork was the fact the club won all eight medley relays in the senior age categories. In individual action, multiple-event winners included Marni Oldershaw, Mitchell Gour, Mack Darragh, Annie Harrison, Mika Spencer, Curtis Samuel and Tera Van Beilen. Oldershaw (four individual, five relay) and Harrison (three individual, six relay) both finished the meet with nine gold medals. Setting new club records were Nicole Bullock, Kent Kikot, Darragh, Harrison, Van Beilen, Gour and Samuel. OAK coach Alex Wallingford also lauded the club's newer swimmers, who rounded out the relays and reached event finals to help the team. "I had a parent from the Newmarket Swim Club tell me we won the team spirit award in his eyes, as our swimmers were always cheering for each other," Wallingford said.
