8- The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 11, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Clearview residents have waited a long time for a new school I find it very interesting that your new polling feature focuses on the Halton School Board decision. Bad news and/or controversy sells newspapers and The Oakville Beaver certainly wants to keep the decision controversy in the forefront with the poll and the predominance of letters against the decision. Residents of the community south of Royal Windsor Drive complain about buying houses there on the understanding there were schools in the area and now they are to be closed. As one of the first purchasers of a home in Clearview 22 years ago, I was shown a plan for the community which included two proposed sites for schools. The separate school board built their school but so far there is no public school. When I foolishly asked one of our politicians, incidentally a resident of the area south of Royal Windsor Drive, about our promised school I was advised that it was not a promise but a proposed site. How many other residents of Clearview were under the same mistaken impression of a promised school when purchasing homes in the area? Drive around some other newer neighbourhoods and you will find that schools have been built a lot sooner thnn 20-plus years. Arguments have been presented that students in the south are entitled to walk to school. Do the students in the north not have the same right? Schools in the south require the students from the north to justify their existence. Much has also been said about the democracy of voting and that 70 per cent of the residents are against the decision. I believe there are seven schools in the south but none in the north. Does that seem fair or democratic? Clearview has been described as a working class or less affluent community and its residents have been treated as second class citizens compared to their more affluent neighbours to the south and other areas of Oakville. However, they and their children are entitled to the same rights. I trust the decision to go ahead and build the new school in Clearview will not be reversed because of the politics and financial clout. A big thank you to all the concerned residents of Clearview who rallied for the cause. GRAEME M. GORDON MATTRESS LIQUIDATION SALE 15 YR. WTY 20 YR.
