While the pride among graduates and their families will no doubt be thunderous, the audible roar will be from the arrival of Harley-Davidsons converging on the scene. The Harley riders are annual visitors at the show -- the heroes that keep funding the program. Erinoak's independent living program teaches youths with disabilities how to take charge of their own lives. The Harley riders help keep the unfunded program running. ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development is one of 20 accredited children's treatment centres (CTCs) in Ontario, helping kids with a range of physical, developmental and communication challenges. However, as a CTC, it must discharge clients when they are 19 years old. The ILP is a two-week program delivered in a safe, secure, supportive and accessible learning environment and takes place each summer thanks to a partnership between ErinoakKids and the Hamilton and District Participaction House, which is an adult service agency formed to provide housing and attendant services to adults with disabilities. However since the ILP receives no government funding, it relies on donor support -- including major annual support from the Milton, Ontario chapter of the Harley Owners Group (HOG). Since it took the ILP to heart when the program launched in 2001, it has raised approximately $135,000 to keep it alive. The Open House is at the Sheridan College Oakville residence, 1410 Trafalgar Rd., from 7-9 p.m. For information, visit www.erinoakkids.ca. The hikes are weekly activities for young explorers to discover amazing features about nature in their own backyard...all summer with the help of a park ranger. Tyke Hikes take place every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. The events are designed for kids five years of age and under, though older kids are welcome too. Kids will love the hands-on activities and games that will help them learn about Ontario's Wildlife. Children use their senses to find out exciting things that they might normally overlook. Children like seeing wildlife up close and are thrilled when they discover they can find plants and animals everywhere, according to the hike leaders. A Park Ranger meets participants just outside the Nature Centre where the adventure will begin. It's good exercise and all trails and paths used for the hikes are stroller and wagon friendly. Daily Vehicle Permits cost $13.85 per vehicle. There is no additional fee for the program.
