14 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 18, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Good Samaritan raising medical aid for hospital in India Continued from page 13 because although an ambulance came, there were no paramedics. "It was just me in charge. He wasn't a paramedic, he was just a driver," said Alkabie, referring to the man driving the ambulance. Recalling how patients in medical shows were transported with sheets, Alkabie was quick in co-ordinating eight people on opposite sides of a long sheet, in order to distribute the weight equally and keep Papa in the most hor- izontal position possible. "It was a pretty intense situation for me, because you're dealing with someone's life," he said. But Alkabie was always sure that the man could easily be nursed back to health with proper care that eventually saw Papa receive nutrients through tubes and IV's as well as some antibiotics. Alkabie was further reassured when the man joked for the first time, after meeting with the group. "He said I want pork -- someone translated that for me -- and I thought it was kind of funny. I smiled, but then he went back to suffering. But just that little bit of humor let me know that he could be helped. He wasn't too far gone like they were trying to make out." After an hour-long ride filled with labyrinth-like, bumpy roads, Alkabie, his team leader, the ambulance driver and Papa arrived at the Christian Hospital Serkawn. That's where Alkabie learned of stories that have kept him in awe and deep desperation to help the hospital. Many of the people who arrive at the hospital come from rural areas, and some cannot afford to pay the expenses. Lalramzauva introduced Alkabie to Laltanpuia, a patient who had acute abdominal pain -- a lot of pain in his stomach. The doctors at the hospital had to do an exploratory surgery where they found a 4.5-foot rotten gangrenous section of his intestines. The doctors surgically removed the rotten area, and re-attached his intestines. The surgery, said Alkabie, cost the hospital a lot of money, but Laltanpuia couldn't pay the bill and the hospital ended up absorbing the costs. While Papa's condition was not as dangerous as Laltanpuia's, he still couldn't afford to pay for the expenses. "I promised that if he (Lalramzauva) takes him (Papa) in, I would come to Canada and write a story about the kindness of the hospital," said Alkabie. The doctor liked the idea. "He was willing to help, he wanted to help me, help Papa." The kindness of the hospital, touched Alkabie, and he wanted to do more than just write a story when he came back to Canada. He wanted to raise money for them. "It was really important for me after this event, to follow up on it, because it would have been a (meaningless) cause if I was just to do this one thing for this one person and completely forget about the hospital." "I wanted people to realize that one Canadian dollar is worth 40 rupees. So a very small amount of Canadian dollar is actually a huge amount of money over there," added Alkabie. Alkabie wants to isolate the money raised from Canada for those individuals, who like Laltanpuia and Papa cannot pay for their medical bills, as well as to send doctors to rural areas that are difficult to get to because of the geographical landscape of the region. "If someone can spare $30, then if you do the math it's 1,200 rupees. So $100 would deal 4,000 rupees -- it's like paying a third of [Laltanpuia's] surgery." "The area needs a hospital," Alkabie explained. "Neighbour helping neighbour out is one thing, but having a hospital that can provide life-saving care for people is another." With the hospital's care, Papa was very quickly brought back to health. "The second day after IV fluids, nutrients and tubes, [Papa] started to make more sense, speak more coherently and eat by himself," he added, a smile stretching across his face.
