4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 18, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Tailor made for Miss Teen Canada By Hiba Kesebi SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER PLANS FOR THE SUMMER: Holy Trinity Catholic High School student Kate Tailor will spend the summer working towards winning the Miss Teen Canada contest on Aug. 23. Most high school students look forward to the summer break as a time to relax and break free from the many commitments of the school year. Holy Trinity Catholic High School student Kate Tailor's summer will be an exception. Tailor's summer will be packed with charitable initiatives, sightseeing, dressing up and all the other glam associated with being one of the 30 national contestants in the 2009 Miss Teen Canada competition. Tailor came to know of the competition through a family friend and was immediately interested. "It's a scholarship program," the Grade 10 student explained. "It's based on not just looks, but your education and involvement." The young woman who is crowned Miss Teen Canada, will be awarded with the Gina Smith Scholarship. The scholarship, founded in 2001, is in memory of 16-year old Miss Teen Nova Scotia 2000, Gina Smith, who died from cancer in 2001. Aside from receiving the scholarship, Miss Teen Canada is expected to have an influential role in the Teddy Bears for Hope campaign, which aims to collect Teddy Bears from Canadian children and send them to lonely, underprivileged children who are caught in a web of poverty. Moreover, Miss Teen Canada will be responsible for visiting high schools throughout Canada to speak about drug use. Other initiatives will depend on her interests. Tailor said there are several organizations that she would like to help. "I want to help Habitat for Humanity and Kids Help Phone. I'll still be involved with Sticks and Stones," she explained. The Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones organization provides those involved with the opportunity to visit schools and talk about bullying. Tailor and the 29 other contestants selected, will spend nine days in Toronto doing various activities including charitable work. Their behaviour will also be observed by a group of judges -- who will remain anonymous to the contestants until Aug. 23, when the 2009 Miss Teen Canada is crowned at the Living Arts Centre (LAC) in Mississauga.
