Many animals are returned to their owners when they arrive at the shelter wearing identification. Others are not so lucky and become part of a long list of animals waiting for adoption. A visit to Oakville's humane society provides a reminder that pet overpopulation is a huge issue and that many pets are a victim of circumstance. Careless overbreeding, moves that leave pets behind, allergies and lack of forethought are just some of the reasons why pets find themselves in the care of the shelter staff and volunteers. If you are looking to add a pet to your household, consider the many good reasons to adopt an animal from the humane society. "Shelters offer the benefit of having spent time with the animals. This gives us the chance to gain a better understanding of their personality and suitability for specific home settings," said Heather White, manager of community outreach and education at the Oakville and District Humane Society. With so many different types of animals coming through the shelter doors, the shelter offers the added value of having had experience with a diverse number of breeds. Knowledge of activity levels, needs and traits are all helpful details provided to new pet owners, but that are not always available through other adoption sources. "People who adopt a shelter pet give unwanted animals a second chance. We want to make sure that they are well matched with their new home and families. We take time to ensure that our matches are a success and understanding each animal is a part of that," said White. Animals adopted through the shelter have received some level of veterinary care. Vaccinations, sterilizations and identification are taken care of prior to adoption, in most cases. These expenses are included in the adoption fees. "We want to help make sure you decide on the right pet for your family," said White. "Our staff want to help shelter animals find life long homes. Our knowledge of the animal is helpful before the adoption, but we also offer support following the adoption," White added. After the adoption the Humane Society provides new pet owners with guidance and information to help them handle any problems that may arise. The added value of this resource and the experience of knowledgeable staff and volunteer are just another appealing reason to adopt a shelter animal.
