Also new in the SLK is a direct-steer system with variable power assist. This is purely mechanical and uses gearing that alters steering gear ratio as the angle changes. In the centre position, there's less assist for good straight-line stability. My only gripe is that accessing the seat controls means jamming your hand in the tight space between door panel and seat, with little room to manipulate the buttons. Best bet is to make the adjustments while parked and set the memory. This package also includes the AIRSCARF, which blows warm air at neck level, thereby extending the topdown season. I've used this feature when the temperature is in the single digits, and with the heater cranked and windows up, you can still ride in comfort. Also included are a fabric wind screen ­ which dramatically reduces wind noise ­ and a heated steering wheel. For another $3,600, you can opt for the Sport Package. This gets you AMG 18" multi-spoke alloy wheels, AMG side skirts, front and rear aprons, as well as steering wheel shift paddles. Optioned up, the SLK350's base price of $63,500 can quickly top $75K. Still that's not out of line, considering the 295-hp Porsche Boxster S starts at $70,200. The premium roadster segment does indeed have some venerable contenders, like the BMW Z4, Audi TT and the Porsche Boxster.
