The environmental group recently launched its Tree Foster Parent Program and is putting a call out for volunteers willing to grow two dozen or more native tree seedlings in their backyards, beginning in the fall. The plan is that the volunteers or foster parents will take care of the seedlings for three or four years, after which the trees will be removed and planted in public spaces and parks throughout Oakville. The tree foster parents will be provided with the seedlings, pots, fertilizer and all the other materials needed to bring the seedlings to fruition. The program is intended to help Oakville achieve its target of a 40 per cent canopy cover by 2057 -- a goal Mayor Rob Burton described as a gift to future generations. Oakvillegreen also noted that by doing this the genetic legacy of native Oakville trees will be protected and the species diversity within the urban forest will be increased. Tree foster parents will also get to meet others involved in the program, learn more about tree care and urban forestry management and get the opportunity to make a hands-on contribution to improving the local environment. Tree foster parents are required to water, fertilize and generally tend to their seedlings to ensure they are healthy. Protection against such predators as deer and rabbits must also be provided. The program will give advice, support and conduct regular check-ins to help make sure as many seedlings reach maturity as possible. The Tree Foster Program is one of four `Full Circle' tree initiatives launched by Oakvillegreen Conservation Association. The others include the Tree Seed Collection Program, the Groundbreakers Tree Planting Program (6,700 trees and shrubs planted in Oakville to date) and the Oakville Heritage Tree Hunt.
