www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 25, 2008 - 15 Building Complete Communities report available A report arising from a recent political summit held in Halton is now available to the public. The document, from the `Building Complete Communities' Summit, underscores the need to find innovative ways to finance growth. It can be accessed through the Region's website at www.halton.ca. "The issue of building complete communities and financing growth transcends political and municipal borders, and the post-summit report highlights the need for all three governments to work together to find solutions," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "I encourage all the participants of the summit to continue their commitment to these important issues and I look forward to keeping this discussion going." The summit was presented by the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) and Halton Region, in conjunction with the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Hamilton Mayors and Chairs group, with the goal of considering common approaches to dealing with financial challenges of growth and sharing information and ideas among the three levels of government. "Communities across Canada are facing challenges they've never encountered before -- unprecedented demands on municipal infrastructure, accelerating planet change and shifting demographics," said CUI president and CEO Glen Murray. "The continued quality of life and economic competitiveness of the GTA and Hamilton depends on successful collaboration between governments, and the summit was a step in this direction." The post-summit report begins with an overview of the fiscal challenges facing municipalities in the GTA and Hamilton, and then reviews roadblocks to be overcome with innovative solutions. The document outlines the summit proceedings, provides an overview of the issues presented by the day's speakers and examines the situation in Halton Region. The report culminates in best practices and recommendations for moving forward, as shared by presenters from Mississauga, Toronto and York Region, and local elected officials including Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger, Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, Burlington Mayor Cam Jackson and York Regional Chairman Bill Fisch.
