www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 25, 2008 - 19 Museum is like school except it's fun By Hiba Kesebi SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Six kids. Six flavours. Six lives. That's the theme that the young participants in the Curators Camp program at the Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate decided to tackle for their Jelly Bean Madness exhibit, which opened July 18. Throughout the past workweek, the six kids, all between 11 and 14 years old, have been coming into the museum from early morning to late afternoon to work on their exhibit. "It's like school, except it's fun," laughed Sean Bruce, who arrives the museum around 8 a.m. and doesn't leave until 4 p.m. Working with a museum team and a curator, the participants go through the steps of designing, installing and promoting a group exhibit. "I'm never bored because there's a lot of activities," he explained. The exhibit is a first of its kind for the museum and is in conjunction with the museum's summer exhibition, Growing up in Oakville: Then and Now. Growing up in Oakville: Then CHRIS KORNACKI / OAKVILLE BEAVER AT THE MUSEUM: Aiden Macdonald, 11 (bottom), Firoza Dodhi, 12 and Firdaus Dodhi at the opening of a Curator Camp exhibit at the Oakville museum. and Now, contrasts the lives of Oakville teens in 1928 with that of today's teens. "What better way to tie this exhibit than with the lives of actual Oakville teens," smiled Preeya Nayee, museum programmer. Jelly Bean Madness features important and symbolic objects in each participant's life. "We had to bring in artifacts from our past or present," said Firza Dodhi, a Grade 8 student at River Oaks Public School. "I brought in a science board because science is my favorite subject, a number rhymes book because it was one of the first books I read, and The Butterfly Lion book because it is one of my favorite. I also brought a teddy bear because I like them," she added. The six kids were responsible for more than just bringing significant artifacts. "We were teaching why it (the artifacts) were important for the person and museum," said Nayee, noting that the students had to state the importance of each object they wanted to showcase. The participants were also responsible for creating and distributing invitations to the exhibit opening, and coming up with a theme and name for it. "We chose Jelly Bean Madness because each jelly bean is a different colour, each jelly bean represents a different flavour of our personality," said Dodhi. While the camp program was only five days long and ran from July 14 to July 18, the exhibit will be on display in the museum for two weeks. Nayee said the museum has been planning for the camp since last fall, and would like to offer another camp next summer, if the demand is still out there.
