For Amanda Laptiste, the YMCA of Oakville has provided considerable support in this direction. The hectic demands of family and job often leave no chance for women to take time for themselves. They sacrifice their own needs to respond to the requirements of others. Laptiste found that the Y provided her with the support to get a more balanced life and meet her own personal fitness goal. Following an exercise program personalized for her by the trainers at the Wellness and Fitness Centre, Laptiste has managed to lose 85 pounds since December 2007. Because of the Y's extensive range of programs, Laptiste can pursue her fitness goal while her 18-month old son Jakob attends the daycare on weekday mornings. "Jakob has the chance to play with other kids which he loves to do, and I have a chance to workout," said Laptiste. In addition to Jakob, Laptiste has two other children, Jessica and NeraLei, 16 and 11 and works full time five days a week in Toronto. The time she spends at the Y is a needed respite given her parental and working responsibilities. Like many working mothers, Laptiste had stopped taking care of herself because of personal and professional issues as well as some health problems. She has been a member of the Y for 12 years and had been off and on with exercising. "Turning 40 motivated me to become active again," she said and the Y had another program in place to help her get back into a physical fitness gradually. "When I started back here, I started coming to the gentle fit class with seniors. After a couple of months, I started going upstairs with the weights and cardio and got a program developed," said Laptiste. Laptiste has found the Y an excellent resource for pursuing her fitness goal, which in turn has built her confidence as a working mother.
