www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 25, 2008 - 7 Oops - PARC report contained error on busing By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Number of students bused to E.J. James off by 259 Joudrie said he made the discovery while discussing the boundary between the proposed Clearview School and E.J. James School with a parent. "After I finished up with them, I flipped open the report to refresh my memory around what the elements and the numbers were and the 30 just jumped off the page at me," he said. Joudrie then submitted the number to the Superintendent of Business, so he could get confirmation of the error from the Planning Department, which he received on Monday, July 21. "I'm not sure why the discrepancy happened. Two things that we've considered is that it was initially 300 and then through a typo it dropped a zero and ended up becoming 30," said Joudrie. A mistake in the calculations used to come up with the busing number is the other possibility, which Joudrie believes is more probable. While figuring out what happened is definitely important the more pressing question is what happens now? Joudrie said that even with the revised numbers the statistics continue to be positive for the JK-8 model still listing more kids as walking than being bused. Despite this Joudrie has placed this item on the Board's agenda for their first regular meeting on Sept. 3, noting the decision about what to do rests with the trustees. A mistake has been found in the Program and Accommodation Review Committee (PARC) PE14 report upon which Halton District School Board trustees based a decision to close four schools in southeast Oakville. The error, discovered by "It will certainly be up to the board as to whether they look to reconsider, or to confirm, or whatever," said Joudrie. "They have lots of options open to them. I just want them to have the information to begin with." The board decision issued on July 2, called for the closing of Linbrook, Chisholm, New Central and Brantwood Schools and the building of a new Clearview School by 2010.
