www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 26, 2008 - 7 Beetle invasion threatens urban forest The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the presence of the emerald ash borer (EAB) in infested trees located on private property in the Eighth Line and Highway 403/QEW area of Oakville. "We're working closely with the CFIA to control the spread of this invasive beetle in our urban forest," said Chris Mark, Director of Parks and Open Space for the Town of Oakville. "Residents should be aware that the emerald ash borer does not spread quickly on its own, but rather through people moving materials it has infested." According to the CFIA, ash products such as pallets, firewood, branches, logs, nursery stock, bark and wood chips easily transport the emerald ash borer. Moving these materials even just a few kilometres can spread the beetle to new areas. "We must all take responsibility in protecting our trees and forests. We're asking residents to help mitigate the potential spread by not moving these products into or out of Oakville until further notice from the CFIA," added Mark. The CFIA will be carrying out increased surveying of trees in the area to determine the extent of the infestation and will notify affected property owners as required. Regulatory measures to control this pest will be taken based on information obtained through the surveys. Town staff continue to work with CFIA officials to address ways to manage the spread of the emerald ash borer . The emerald ash borer is shiny emerald green beetle that kills living ash trees. It was first detected in 2002 in Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario after being introduced to North America from Eastern Asia.
