www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 30, 2008 - 27 Reavie will be back in '09 Longhorns prepare for unknown Continued from page 25 ish off the last two holes of his previous day's round that he eventually had to pack in because it was too dark to read his putt on the 17th green. When he two-putted 17 for par and then birdied 18, he left the course as the third-round leader and returned to his hotel for a nap. Golfers don't like their routines to be interrupted --not that the rain delays on the first two days prevented Reavie from posting the lowest round each day -- so, after sleeping for an hour and a half, he did what he always does. "I woke up, took a shower, and did the exact same routine I do every morning. Even though I had already done it once before, just to get in the same flow." Reavie could have also been troubled that pre-tournament favourite Anthony Kim sat just one stroke behind when he teed off, again, just before 2 p.m. He could have caved when he bogeyed two of the first three holes in the final round (he had recorded only one bogey on the front nine the entire tournament to that point). Instead he birdied the next hole. "Momentum-wise, it calmed me down, I made a couple bogies. I didn't really hit terrible shots," he said. "I was pulling the ball a little bit. It was a little quick. Little nervous, and that calmed me down quite a bit." Birdies on 9 and 10 all but sealed the victory, except in Reavie's mind. Even when his final challenger, the veteran Mayfair, settled for par on the final hole giving him two shots to play with, Reavie didn't relax until the 266th shot of the 267 he took over the course of the week. "I didn't feel comfortable until I hit my third shot on the green on 18. That's when I relaxed and said ` OK, I've got it.'" Reavie then stepped up and put an emphatic stamp on his win by draining a 12-foot birdie putt. Though Reavie got a loud ovation from the crowd gathered around the 18th green, it was still nothing compared to the one Canadian Mike Weir received 15 minutes earlier when he made his way up the final fairway. "I'm lucky that I'm one of the very few guys that get a chance to have something like that happen," said Weir, who finished with a solid two-under 69 to earn a share of fifth place. Two-time defending champ Jim Furyk, who finished tied for 14th, also got a rousing cheer from the gallery. Reavie could hear a similar response when the Canadian Open returns to Glen Abbey next year. "I'll be back, absolutely. Wouldn't miss it for the world," he said. By that time, the 2008 champion will be better known to the Canadian crowd and Reavie, he hopes, won't be so unfamiliar with the numbers on the winner's cheque. Barry Emo thinks the Oakville Longhorns will be a scary first-round opponent for any team in the Northern Football Conference. Whose opponent the Longhorns will be, however, remains the big question. As of yesterday (Tuesday), just four days before the NFC playoffs begin, the league had not finalized its first-round matchups. Several issues -- one team's tardiness in paying its league fees this year, another's alleged season-long use of an ineligible player, and a postponed game earlier this month between Oakville and the Oshawa Hawkeyes -- have league officials scrambling to determine the final standings. Oakville's most likely opponent this weekend will be the Milton Marauders, but even the potential location for a matchup between the two rivals is unclear. Emo, the Longhorns' coach, expects Oakville will be awarded a forfeit victory from its unplayed game against Meet Burloak's Olympians Local residents will have the opportunity to meet five Olympians just days before they head to the Olympics. The Burloak Canoe Club will host a sendoff barbecue for its Olympians Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oakville's Adam van Koeverden and Burlington's Mark Oldershaw, Brady Reardon and national canoe/kayak coach Scott Oldershaw, as well as Mississauga's Chris Pellini, will be at the club. The public is invited to come meet them and wish them well. Van Koeverden, who last week was named Canada's flag bearer for the opening ceremonies, will compete in the K-1 500-metre and 1,000m. He is the reigning Olympic champion in the 500m and won a bronze at the 2004 Games in the 1,000m. Oldershaw will compete in the C-1 (canoe singles) 500m. Reardon and Pellini will make up half of Canada's K-4 (kayak fours) entry. The sendoff barbecue will be held at the Burloak Canoe Club, located at 160 Water St. The Olympics begin Aug. 8 in Beijing, China. Oshawa. The Longhorns travelled to Oshawa and were prepared to play, but City of Oshawa officials declared the field unsafe to play on. Under the NFC constitution, Emo said, the Hawkeyes are required to have a backup field arranged. "It should be a forfeit on Oshawa's part because they didn't have a backup field available," said Emo. If a forfeit victory is awarded to Oakville, the Longhorns would finish fourth and host Milton Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field for a 7 p.m. start. If the game is declared a tie, Milton would be home to Oakville Saturday afternoon. The Longhorns improved to 3-2-1 on the season with a 34-15 victory last weekend in North Bay. Tommy Wighton had a pair of touchdown runs for Oakville, which scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Josh Spanik threw touchdown passes to Jamie Radway, Dimitrius Woodward and Brandon Digby, and Liston Bates set up a major by tackling the North Bay punter near the Bulldogs' goal line. -- Jon Kuiperij 100 House for Sale 102 Open House 103 Private Sales 105 Townhouse Sale 110 Apartment/ Condo's for Sale 112 Cottages for Sale 115 Farms for Sale, Rent or Wanted 120 Out of Town Properties 125 Property Outside Canada 130 Housing Wanted 135 Lots, Acreages 140 Investment Business Properties 145 Industrial, Commercial Space 150 Offices, Business Space 155 Stores for Sale, Rent or Wanted 159 Investment Opportunities 160 Business Opportunities 161 Franchises 162 Insurance 163 Professional Directory 164 Tax, Financial 165 Mortgages, Loans 166 Accountants 167 Office, Industrial Equipment 168 Business Services, Personals 169 Computer, Internet 170 Apartments, Flats for Rent 172 Furnished Apartments 173 Miscellaneous Rentals 174 Short Term Rentals 175 Apartments, Flats Wanted 180 Condominiums for Rent 185 Houses for Rent 190 Townhouses for Rent 191 Housing Wanted 192 Rooms for Rent or Wanted 193 Room and Board Available & Wanted 194 Shared Accommodation 195 Retirement Living 196 Hall, Lodges 200 Vacation Properties 205 Rentals Outside Canada 208 Bed and Breakfast 209 Cottages for Rent 210 Mobile Homes and Park 211 Motor Homes 212 Recreation Vehicles 215 Campers,Trailers, Sites 225 Camping Equipment 230 Sports Equipment 231 Aviation 232 Boats, Supplies 233 Snowmobiles 234 Pools and Sup 235 Resorts, Camps, 236 Travel 237 Hobbies and Crafts 239 Women's Column 245 Births 246 Adoptions 248 Birthdays 249 Coming Events 250 Engagements 251 Forthcoming Marriages 252 Marriages 253 Anniversaries 254 Graduations 255 Announcements 256 Deaths 257 Obituaries 258 In Memoriam 259 Cards of Thanks 260 Tenders 261 Legal Notices 262 Public Notices 263 Car Pools,Transportation 265 Lost and Found 267 Companions 268 Personals 269 Support Groups 270 Nannies, Live In,.
