2- The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 30, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Deerfield Golf club Crimestoppers wants a few good jailbirds Crime Stoppers of Halton wants to arrest some good citizens and turn them into jailbirds. It's all part of a Jail-AThon fundraising event on Oct. 17-18 at the Hopedale Mall. Tom Suddaby, chair of Halton Crime Stoppers, is hoping local politicians and business leaders from across Halton will volunteer to spend some time behind bars while raising donations for the program. "We anticipate this will be our largest fundraising event of the year," Suddaby said. "It's also going to be a fun event and we're looking forward to seeing who will end up in the makeshift jail we will be setting up at the indoor courtyard of the mall," he said. Suddaby said the mall management has been supportive of this project and is hoping many store owners will volunteer as jailbirds. The success that Crime Stoppers has achieved since being launched here in 1988 has almost depleted the reward fund and cash is urgently required to allow the program to continue operating, Suddaby said. A similar fundraiser was organized by Halton Crime Stoppers several years ago and raised some $30,000 as well as created a great deal of public awareness. "Not only does this type of initiative bring in needed funds, but it provides the community an opportunity to make a difference while having fun doing it," Suddaby said. "We are counting on the Halton community to participate with us. A safer community is your call." Halton Crime Stoppers coordinator, Sergeant Gary Gold said the program has assisted police by providing valuable information that helps solve crime. "What many people don't realize is that Crime Stoppers is a non profit program that is completely independent from Halton Regional Police Service," he said. "The program needs to raise money to continue its efforts to help keep our community safe." Suddaby said anyone wishing to become a jailbird at the Jail-A-Thon should contact the Crime Stoppers office at 905-825-4747 ext 5139. Residents can also make a $100 contribution to Halton Crime Stoppers and arrange to have someone put behind bars, he said.
