www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 1, 2008 - 21 Local Cancer Society unit hosting dog walkathon this month Calling all dogs, dog owners and dog lovers in Oakville. Join the Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit on Sunday, Aug. 24 for Oakville's first Paws for Hope trail walk-a-thon, where dogs and their owners walk together to raise funds for people living with cancer. Scheduled to take place at Pilgrim's Park, which is located at 1551 Pilgrim's Way, participants will enjoy a leisurely walk through the Glen Abbey trail system. The fun will get underway at 9:30 a.m. with registration and a special family warm up. The walk will officially start at 10 a.m. "We're encouraging everyone in the family, including the dog, to join us for a morning of fun on the trails all in support of a great cause." said Lisa Moffatt, fundraising co-ordinator of the Oakville Unit. The Oakville Unit decided to organize Paws for Hope after hearing from numerous cancer survivors and volunteers in the community of the important role their pets played in their cancer journey. "We were overwhelmed hearing the incredible stories from people about their pets. We thought it was finally time to host a pet-friendly event where we can honour these special caregivers," said Moffatt. The first Paws for Hope walk-athon took place in 1993 thanks to a great initiative by Nichole Laderoute from the Québec City Unit. Laderoute, who had been diagnosed with cancer, wanted to create a fundraising event that would be fun for the whole family and feature her favourite animal and loyal friend: her dog. Since its inception, Paws for Hope events have continued to take place in Quebec and have recently started to branch out in communities in Ontario. 2008 marks Oakville's first event. Paws for Hope is a pledgebased fundraising event. Participants who raise a minimum of $25 in pledges will receive the Paws for Hope doggie bag, which includes treats for the trails, water and clean "We were overwhelmed hearing the incredible stories from people about their pets.
