Tommy Denison threw six touchdown passes to lead the Oakville Longhorns to a 45-21 playoff win over the Milton Marauders and advance to the Northern Football Conference semifinals. The two-time most valuable player in Canadian university football put on a clinic for the fans, which included former player and coach of the Toronto Argonauts, Mike "Pinball" Clemons. Denison was 25-for-52 for 344 yards. The Longhorns started off with an aerial bombardment and by early in the second quarter had jumped out to 28-0 lead. Rick Rodrigues had two of the touchdown receptions, while Demetrius Woodard and Jamie Radway each had one. The Marauders made a spirited comeback. Late in the second quarter they recovered a fumble on a punt and took it in for a touchdown on the next play. Then they recovered an onside kick and turned that into another major. A 45-yard field goal by Oakville's Mike Ray closed the first half, but the Marauders put together a long drive on their first possession of the second half and suddenly it was 31-21. A Milton interception gave them the ball back again but they stalled and Denison went back to work. On a fourth down attempt he connected with Vaughan Swart and then on the next play to Rodrigues for his third touchdown of the game. A key interception by Jeff Hardiman in the Oakville end zone effectively ended any hope for the Marauders, and with just over a minute remaining Woodard earned his second major on a 30-yard reception. As effective as Oakville's offence was they still needed the defence to get them the ball. They completely shut down Milton's ball control running game, allowing just 55 yards on 25 carries. They ran smack into a wall that included perennial all-star Wayne Sliwinski and Stafford Wilson, who also had two sacks. "We're so close. Half the players on their team played for the Longhorns, and vice-versa," said Slwinski, a former Marauder who said the game plan was to stop the run. "It's good for the league." Former Milton coach Barry Emo was relieved after the game. "I was starting to think this was one of those situations where one team gets up really early and then eases up and lets their guard down. We gave them new life." Oakville's semifinal game is next Saturday on the road against the defending champion Sault Ste. Marie Steelers.
