"We are thrilled that Petro-Canada has granted us right of access to their waterfront parkette," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "The ability to connect public land with private land allows us to continue to build a seamless and continuous lakeside park with better connectivity and enhanced public access." As a trade-off for the use of their lands, PetroCanada has secured a Pipeline Crossing Agreement with the Town for its pipeline infrastructure under Lakeshore Road West and Rebecca Street. "The licence (Park Licence Agreement) concept between us and the Town is good for everyone. It's certainly good for the Town, it's good for PetroCanada and it's particularly good for the people of Oakville, who now have an extension to the hiking trail that they already had," said Ken Dymock, general manager of distribution, Petro-Canada. "This is really good use of land, this is very scenic and recreational land and it fits very nicely with the use we have, which is to pump water up to the terminal and also to pump product from the docks. Hopefully, we'll be unobtrusive and people can enjoy the view." Ward 1 Regional Councillor Alan Johnston pointed out that this project has been years in the making, dating back to a vision first conceived by former Oakville Mayor Harry Barrett. The process was further helped along by the efforts of Ward 1 Councillor Ralph Robinson. "In the late '80s, PetroCanada, some people from the community and a couple of politicians, decided they wanted to do more for the environment in Oakville and in Bronte in particular," explained Robinson. "Under the leadership of Petro-Canada, we structured a committee called the Community Advisory "We are thrilled that Petro-Canada has granted us right of access to their waterfront parkette. The ability to connect public land with private land allows us to continue to build a seamless and continuous lakeside park with better connectivity and enhanced public access." Rob Burton, Mayor of Oakville Committee to PetroCanada. I was the third (and current) chair and Ken Dymock and I talked about other good things we could do for the community. Ken brought me down and showed me this piece of land that they owned and we discussed the merger of the Town land, the PetroCanada land and the park land and ended up with what we have here right now." The new asphalt trail, which the Town will begin construction on later this month, will be accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and inline skaters and will provide access to the Village Wood Park trail system as well as the soon-to-bedeveloped trail system on the west side of PetroCanada's pipeline corridor lands. The park is a welcome addition to Oakville's waterfront and officials point out that the park's creation brings the Town one step closer to achieving an important goal. "Everybody looks at the waterfront trail as a lovely recreational feature, but we also want to start encouraging it as an actually transportation component," said Dave Bloomer, commissioner of Infrastructure and Transportation Services, Town of Oakville. "We ultimately want to get to the point where people can viably ride their bicycles or walk to and from destinations and not necessarily have to rely on their vehicle," Bloomer said.
