26 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 13, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Receiver's big game in vain as Longhorns eliminated from playoffs By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR More than 400 passing yards and a record-setting performance by one of their receivers was only half-good enough for the Oakville Longhorns in last weekend's Northern Football Conference semifinals. The Sault Ste. Marie Steelers bounced the Longhorns from the NFC playoffs Saturday, doubling Oakville 54-27 in Sault Ste. Marie. The Steelers will meet the Tri City Outlaws in the league final this weekend at Wilfrid Laurier University. Longhorns receiver Vaughan Swart felt the Steelers exploited Oakville's offensive line, which struggled to protect the quarterback or establish a credible running game throughout the season. "(The offensive linemen) have improved all year, but when you have two fantastic (defensive) linemen like the Soo has, it makes it really tough for our team," said Swart, who caught an NFC-record 15 passes in the loss. "With us being such a pass-heavy team, the defence can pin their ears back and just come." That took its toll on Oakville pivot Tommy Denison, who was 27-of-48 for 411 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. "There were more bruises on (Denison) than a banana that's been left out for a month," Longhorns head coach Barry Emo said. "He was sacked about 10 times and probably hit another 30 times. He took some pretty good shots. We just didn't have an answer for (the Steelers) defensively." Still, the Longhorns managed to hang with the second-seeded Steelers for much of the contest, trailing 33-27 with six minutes to go. Sault Ste. Marie put the game away with three late touchdowns, including speedy running back Josh Gauthier's third major of the night. Gauthier finished the game with 190 rushing yards and tacked on a 93-yard kick See Short page 27 FALL & WINTER PROGRAMS HAVE ARRIVED!!
