Misheal, along with two other students, Jennifer Lee and Nahila Joseph from Oakville Teens in Action, will stay in Ghana for 23 days, where they plan to teach leadership skills to Ghanaian youth who are part of the Youth Creating Change (YCC) group in Ghana. "The hugest thing with poverty is that no one knows how to get out of it," said 17year-old Misheal, adding that she hopes the youths in Ghana will be able to benefit from the workshops. For the past month, the three students were busy trying to create lesson plans for their workshops. The topics include: public speaking, traits of being a good leader, business and marketing, world issues and what can be done in their communities. According to Joseph, they are not going to offer advice. Our work will be like a stepping stone." Aside from preparing workshops and lesson plans, the three girls also looked for sponsors to provide Ghanaian youth with school supplies, books and soccer jerseys. "We need soccer jerseys because at the end of the workshops we've organized a soccer tournament," Misheal said. Misheal said Sid's Trophies provided $250 worth of trophies, National Sports provided soccer balls for the tournament, and Books on Kerr St. gave out children's books. Misheal said their fundraising efforts with Oakville Teens in Action, which is entirely run by teens across Oakville, started a long time ago. To raise money for the trip, they hosted a fashion show, concert, ball tournaments and car washes. Oakville Teens in Action has sent teens to Africa for the past two years. There are no specific requirements to take the trip, however, those who wish to attend should be motivated to help others. "It's going to be such a memorable experience," said Lee. "I hope that by the end, they (the teens in Ghana) will know that they can do a lot for their community." Youth Creating Change is a nonprofit youth organization in Ghana, which aims to motivate youth to create positive change within their communities and lives through leadership training, educational and career planning, and economic development.
