The 19-year-old St. Thomas Aquinas grad had drawn interest from American schools as early as three years ago, but was uncertain whether she wanted to study outside of Canada. She made that decision recently, accepting a scholarship offer from Syracuse University. "I wouldn't say it was my first choice," Metcalfe said. "But I like the way things ended up." Metcalfe said she chose Syracuse for a variety of reasons, the main one being the quality of education. "It's more of a realization. Women's hockey can only go so far, and it's more about the education," she said. "Of course you want to play and compete, but you also have to be realistic." Metcalfe's scholarship is worth $49,000 per season, on a year to year basis. She will study arts and sciences, and is considering a career in law. On the ice, meanwhile, Metcalfe expects to make an immediate impact with the Orange. The defenceman, who captained the Provincial Women's Hockey League's Oakville Junior Ice last season, feels she will bring leadership and playmaking skills to her new team. "I think I'll fit in great," she said. "They liked that I was a leader and that I was aggressive, that I'm an offensive defenceman." Metcalfe spent three years with the Ice after three seasons of rep with the Oakville Hornets. She won a provincial championship with the peewee A Hornets in 2001-02, just two seasons after starting out in the sport as a house league player. Her brother, Spencer, played with the Ontario Hockey League's Owen Sound Attack last season, while her father, Bill, coached the Junior Ice. Taylor said both have been influential in her development. "My dad has been a really big inspiration," she said. "I never want to feel like I let him down." Metcalfe will depart for Syracuse next week. This will be the first season the Orange is icing a women's hockey squad. Three Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) swimmers, making their first appearance on the international scene, won medals at last weekend's North American Challenge Cup in Edmonton. Their efforts helped Canada win the overall team title at the competition. Mack Darragh won gold medals in the 1314 boys' 400-metre individual medley and the 4x100m medley relay, adding a silver in the 4x100m freestyle and a bronze in the 200m breaststroke. He also posted fourth-place finishes in the 100m breaststroke and 200m butterfly. Marni Oldershaw finished the meet with six medals, including a gold in the 13-14 girls' 400m IM. She earned silver in the 200m IM and bronze in the 200m breaststroke in addition to the three bronzes she won in relay competition (4x100m free, 4x100m medley and 4x200m freestyle). Mitchell Gaur claimed three bronze medals in the 11-12 boys' division (200m backstroke, 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley). All three swimmers set OAK records at the meet as well. Darragh set new standards in the 100m freestyle, 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly and 400m IM. Gaur broke the previous club records in the 100m and 200m backstrokes, and Oldershaw surpassed the 400m IM mark. The competition included two teams from the western United States and a full team from Mexico.
