4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 15, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Threatened robber flees on foot Halton Police are still trying to track down the would-berobber of a Kerr Street convenience store early Wednesday morning. Police said shortly before 4 a.m., the lone bandit entered Joe's Market, located at 570 Kerr St., and confronted the male employee. The robber threatened the employee claiming that he had a knife. The employee ignored the threat, however, and confronted the robber, who quickly retreated from the store. The employee was not injured during the robbery and no money or merchandise was stolen. The suspect is described as black, 17-19 years of age, 5foot-5 with a thin build. He wore black pants, a black long-sleeved shirt, a toque and a bandanna that covered his face. The Halton Regional Police Service offers the following tips on how to get through a robbery: remain calm, obey the robber's commands, do not antagonize the robber, consider all firearms to be loaded and look at the robbers -- notice details to aid you in later describing them to police. Watch the direction the robber takes and if they use a vehicle try to get the licence plate number. Police advise that you do not chase or follow the suspect as police could mistake you for the robber in a pursuit. After a robbery, call police immediately and give a description of the suspect and the direction in which they travelled. Also advise police on whether weapons were used. If you work in a store that was robbed, police ask that you protect the crime scene by keeping customers or other employees away from the area, ask witnesses to wait for police and lock the doors until police arrive. Halton police are continuing to investigate this incident. Anyone with information related to it is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4747, ext. 2215 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). "One of the suspects produced a meat cleaver and when the males did not co-operate, one of the suspects struck the victim with the meat cleaver (blunt end) two or three times," said Detective Sergeant Kevin Maher of the Halton Police. "Eventually the victim complied and handed over an Xbox controller, his wallet, as well as some gift certificates to some retail stores and a season's pass to Canada's Wonderland. The other victim also handed over some cash and a pair of headphones." With the robbery complete, the three assailants jumped on bicycles and left the area, cycling towards Kingsway Drive. No one was injured during the robbery, but the use of a weapon has Maher concerned. "We don't like these (type of crime) at all," he said. "There was potential for serious injury. Fortunately, nothing happened here. We're quite concerned about it and we're actively pursuing the suspects." In the interest of public safety, Maher advises anyone in a similar position to just comply, especially if the robber is armed. "It's better to comply than resist and provoke possible injury," he said. All three suspects are described as black males. The first suspect, who wielded the meat cleaver, is described as 5-foot-10 with a slim build, wearing a black hoodie and baggy pants. The second suspect is described as 5-foot-10 with a slim build, wearing baggy pants and a dark hoodie with the hood pulled over his head. The third suspect is described as taller than the first two with his hair worn in cornrows.
