www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 15, 2008 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR How much is a kidney worth? Re your editorial in last week's Wednesday's Beaver, I cannot agree with the proposed private member's bill to change Ontario's voluntary organ donation system into one of implied consent. This is a serious issue, requiring a careful and positive decision by each individual, rather than the negative, sins of omission approach of, in effect, making no decision at all. Humans have the right to control their own bodies, and yes, even after death, be it `Take my organs -- please, bury me in one piece, or cast my ashes into Lake Ontario.' We should equate organ donation with abortion rights, where a woman has control of her own body and where she can make a conscious decision how to use it regardless of any impact this may have on others. Perhaps the Ontario government could increase public awareness of the benefits of donating organs by launching a major campaign, or, and this is where the Devil's Advocate comes in, all human organs could be given a monetary value and let the market place decide. It's called the law of demand and supply. PETER WARREN DON'T PAY RETAIL! I have been reading the comments and letters in The Oakville Beaver in regards to the STA redevelopment and the letter from Charles Johnston of SCORA. I am still struck by the nagging question, what is the personal or political motivation behind this group? Their website site states that the boundaries that they are concerned with are from Maurice Drive to Fourth Line, south of Mary Street to the lake. There is a one liner (currently) on SCORA's website about additional concerns. But, if the concern is for the greater area then why aren't we seeing or reading more comments on SCORA's website or seeing more garden signs against plans for the other areas, which in part includes the Maurice and Garden Drive area, the old Montessori school space, and the residential units going up south of Lakeshore Road near Birch Hill Lane? Are there not going to be trees taken down and less green space and more traffic congestion after the redevelopment of these areas as well? Why is this group solely focused on St. Thomas Aquinas if its stated mandate is a wider area than just the school lands? GORD MACKENZIE WAINSCOTING deas.
