www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 16, 2008 - 9 Animal expert here Sunday S ue Sternberg understands animals. Tomorrow, Sunday, Aug. 17, the author, founder and director of Rondout Valley Animals for Adoption and Community Animal Shelter Association, will bring her 23 years of experience to Oakville in a workshop being put on by the Oakville and District Humane Society. Animal care professionals and interested members of the public are invited to purchase tickets to the event taking place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on Argus Road. "Sue is an expert on dog aggression and an innovator in the field of shelter dog welfare," said Johanne Golder, executive director at the Oakville and District Humane Society. "She has helped to develop programs to prevent pet relinquishment and overpopulation, to help match families with safe pets, and to help shelters attend to the mental health of animals in their care." Training Wheels, a mobile community outreach program, and Assess-a-Pet, a method to evaluate animal temperament, are two popular programs developed by Sternberg, who has also shared her knowledge on television, radio and as an author of books. Her most recent books include the titles Successful Dog Adoption, A Howell Dog Book of Distinction and Great Dog Adoptions: A Guide for Shelters (Latham Foundation Press, 2002). Sternberg is also a popular speaker at national humane and dog training conferences. "We are bringing Sue to Oakville because adoptions are a critical part of the work we do at the shelter," added Golder. "Dog behaviour is something that impacts most people. On Sunday Sue will focus on the ethogram of the shelter dog, deadly puppies and dogs, and dog-to-dog behaviour. This is information that's useful to everyone considering bringing a dog into their home," said Golder. The workshop is presented as part of the Oakville and District Humane Society's ongoing commitment to providing great care to Oakville's local animals, while keeping the community informed about assessment and placement of shelter pets. "Information is an important part of successfully adopting a shelter animal," said Golder. "We want to ensure that families that adopt make the best possible choice. We take pride in proactively giving our community the opportunity to learn 24 Hours Coming Soon To Oakville 125 Cross Avenue Located in Trafalgar Village fax: 905-845-6665 email: dennysoakville@yahoo.ca CABINET REFACING AFTER PET OF THE WEEK: Lilly is a very happy, busy girl.
