Lesley Compagnon and Ian Stanley, the parents of nearly 10-month-old Eli, are preparing for the 4th Annual Walk for Grace in support of pediatric brain tumor research at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. The walk is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 7 at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. It is named for Grace Compagnon Stanley, Lesley and Ian's first child. Grace was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in October 2005 at 20 months of age. She endured more than a dozen surgeries, three on her brain, along with eight months of chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant. Despite the efforts of pediatric specialists, Grace died on Sept. 6, 2006. "I miss her as much today as the day she died. We look forward to raising as much money as we can," said Lesley, who was seven months pregnant with Eli at the time of last year's walk. The 2007 edition of the event raised more than $27,000 and had more than 120 participants. The goal had been $10,000-$15,000. Run, walk or stroll for CCARE Saturday Participants in The Canadian Central American Relief Effort (CCARE) run, walk and stroller roll can earn awards while supporting a good cause. The annual five-kilometre fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Spencer Smith Park in Burlington. Entrants can register and pick up kits from 8-9 a.m., with the event starting at 9:30 a.m. Medals will be given to the top overall male and female and the first three finishers in each age category. The fundraiser is being held in support of the children of the Merendon Mountains of Guatemala. CCARE members are sharing skills, knowledge, funds and other resources to provide a relief effort for the area, working in partnership with a community of Central Americans. The physical removal of the bridge structure requires QEW eastbound and westbound highway lane diversions and closures starting at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, August 23 until 9:30 a.m. Sunday, August 24. Highway lanes will be closed in the eastbound and westbound directions and diverted around the bridge and back onto the QEW. To facilitate demolition activities, the westbound QEW on-ramp from Bronte Road will also be closed during this period. The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) is undertaking highway expansion work to provide High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on the QEW through Oakville between Burloak Drive and Trafalgar Road. Implementing HOV lanes on provincial highways will ease congestion, reduce commute times and promote public transit by getting more people into multi-occupant vehicles. The QEW highway expansion work is expected to be completed by the summer of 2011.
