www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 20, 2008 - 35 Dragon boaters raise $70,000 Sinead shines at swim meet By Bill Roebuck SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER For a change, the water on Sunday wasn't falling from the skies. Rather, it was smooth and calm on Lake Kelso for the fifth annual TigerTel Oakville Charity Dragon Boat Festival at Kelso Conservation Park. The festival is a fundraiser organized by the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar. This year, $70,000 was raised for the community, with the money going to dozens of area charities, including the two prime beneficiaries of this year's festival, the Halton Children's Aid Society and Habitat for Humanity Halton. The action-packed day saw 72 dragon boat teams competing. Many Halton-area groups participated, and there was even a team from as far away as Lindsay, Ont. In all, there were approximately 1,600 paddlers, dozens of volunteers, vendors, entertainers and sponsors at the event, bringing the total attendance to about 2,000. Local businesses were strong supporters of the festival. This year's title sponsor was TigerTel Communications Inc., of Oakville, which provides award-winning, outsourced call centre and contact management services across North America. It was joined by silver sponsors, The Cooperators, of Oakville, which provides financial security for Canadians, and The Sign Department, also of Oakville, which creates customized signage for any message, as well as bronze sponsor Bruce Owen-Wahl of CIBC Wood Gundy in Oakville. "The TigerTel Oakville Charity Dragon Boat Festival means so much to the Children's Aid Foundation of Halton on many different levels," said Tina Blatchford, executive director of the foundation. "It's a great opportunity to raise much-needed funds for the many programs supported by the foundation for children receiving services from Halton Children's Aid Society. "We are so grateful to the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar for organizing such a wonderful event that gives us so many opportunities to make a real and positive difference to the lives of children in our care." Andrew Gaydon, captain of the Dragon team, said he knows how much planning and execution goes into an event of this magnitude. "(The Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar) really did an outstanding professional job. They kept to the time schedule, they had lots of official helpers, they had organized and experienced crew helpers, and everybody had fun," he said. Gwen Angell-Mighton of the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar, chair of the festival's organizing committee, said her club is extremely proud of the benefit resulting in the community directly from the funds raised. "It's also a hugely fun event, so it's win-win for everyone involved," she said. She also thanked Lively Dragon, which provided race management for the event. Rotary is respected globally for its charity work, especially with children. From vaccinating the world's children against polio to providing communities with clean water, Rotary sends volunteers into every corner of the world. Local Rotary clubs also support the needy right in our own community through a wide range of projects such as running an annual Strawberry Social for elderly shut-ins to helping fund a bus for a local Alzheimer Day Program operated by Acclaim Health, and much more. While her brother Colin was preparing for his Olympic swimming debut, Sinead Russell was busy representing Canada at the North American Challenge Cup in Edmonton earlier this month. Russell set North American Challenge Cup records in the 100metre and 200m backstroke events on her way to eight gold medals and a silver at the event. She also set four new Dolphins Swim Club records. Russell won the 100m and 800m freestyles, the 100m and 200m backstrokes and the 200m individual medley, adding silver in the 200m freestyle. She was also part of three gold medalwinning relay teams. The Dolphins Swim Club finishes the season with four national recordsetters, 12 provincial record-setters and a member at the Olympics.
